What Size UVC LED Water Sterilizer Do You Need? A Flow-Rate Sizing Guide for Homes and Businesses in the UAE and Saudi Arabia
Choosing a UVC water sterilizer comes down to one number: flow rate, measured in litres per minute (LPM). Get it right and every drop that reaches your tap has received a full germicidal dose. Get it wrong and water moves through the chamber too quickly to be treated properly. This guide shows you how to match your property to the correct model in about two minutes.

Why flow rate is the most important specification
Ultraviolet disinfection works on dose, and dose is the product of UVC intensity multiplied by contact time. The intensity is fixed by the LED array inside the chamber. Contact time is decided entirely by how fast the water is moving.
A sterilizer rated at 25 LPM delivers its full validated dose to every litre, as long as the water passing through does not exceed 25 litres per minute. Push 40 litres per minute through that same chamber and each litre spends less time under the LEDs, so the dose drops. The unit is still working, but it is no longer doing the job you bought it for.
This is why the correct question is never “how many people live here?” It is “how much water can this property draw at the same moment?”
How to calculate your peak flow in 60 seconds
Count the outlets that could realistically run at the same time during your busiest part of the day, then add up their typical flow rates.

Worked example. A three-bedroom villa in Sharjah, family of five, weekday morning: two showers running plus the kitchen tap. That is roughly 10 + 10 + 7 = 27 litres per minute. The 10 LPM unit would be badly undersized here. The correct choice is the 25 LPM model, and the 45 LPM if the household also runs an outdoor tap or a maid’s bathroom during the same window.

Point-of-use or whole-house?
Point-of-use (4 LPM, under-sink) treats water at one outlet, usually the kitchen tap. It is the right answer for a tenant who cannot modify the building’s plumbing, for an office pantry, or for anyone who only wants protection on water they drink and cook with.
Whole-house (10 to 46 LPM) treats every litre entering the property, so showers, basins, ice machines and washing machines are covered too. In Gulf homes this matters more than most people expect, because inhaled shower aerosol and water used for wudu, brushing teeth and washing produce all come from the same tank.
Undersizing versus oversizing
Undersizing is the only real mistake. If your peak demand exceeds the rated flow, the water still reaches your tap, but the dose it received is lower than the validated figure, and you have no way of seeing that from the outside.
Oversizing costs more up front and nothing afterwards. A 25 LPM unit running at 8 litres per minute simply gives that water a longer exposure. What does LPM mean on a water sterilizer?
LPM stands for litres per minute, and it is the maximum flow at which the unit delivers its full germicidal UV dose. It is a ceiling, not a target: a 25 LPM sterilizer performs correctly at any flow up to 25 litres per minute.
What size UV sterilizer do I need for a villa in Dubai?

Does a UVC sterilizer replace my water filter?
