A plain-language reference guide to the terms that matter in water purification, UVC sterilization, and water quality — so you can make confident, informed decisions about your home's water.


A

Active Hours

The hours during which a UVC LED is actually emitting light — counted only when water is flowing through the device. Unlike traditional UV mercury lamps that run continuously, ZeniRay's smart flow switch means the LED only operates on demand. A 5,000 active-hour lifespan can therefore translate to 15–20 years of protection in typical household use.

Antimicrobial

Describes any agent, substance, or technology that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. UVC light is antimicrobial by disrupting microbial DNA — without the use of chemicals.


B

Bacteria

Single-celled microorganisms that can cause disease when present in drinking water. Common waterborne bacteria include E. coli, Legionella, Salmonella, and Pseudomonas. Unlike viruses, bacteria can reproduce independently — which is why stagnant, warm water (such as water sitting in storage tanks in the Gulf) creates conditions for rapid bacterial multiplication. UVC light inactivates bacteria by damaging their DNA.

Biofilm

A thin layer of microorganisms that adheres to surfaces inside pipes and water tanks, protected by a self-produced matrix of organic material. Biofilm is particularly difficult to remove with conventional filtration and is highly resistant to chlorine. It is a primary reason why water stored in rooftop and underground tanks in the UAE and KSA can degrade in microbial quality over time, even after municipal treatment. UVC sterilization inactivates the microorganisms in passing water, reducing biofilm formation at points of use.


C

CE Certification

A mandatory conformity marking for products sold in the European Economic Area (EEA), indicating that the product meets EU safety, health, and environmental requirements. For electrical water treatment devices, CE certification typically encompasses EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) and LVD (Low Voltage Directive) compliance. All ZeniRay models carry CE certification.

CFU (Colony Forming Unit)

A unit of measurement used to quantify the number of viable bacteria or fungi in a sample. Water quality standards define acceptable CFU counts per millilitre for drinking water. Sterilization performance is often expressed as a log reduction in CFU — for example, a 6-log reduction means reducing CFU by a factor of one million.

Chlorination

The addition of chlorine or chlorine compounds to water to kill microorganisms. Chlorination is widely used in municipal water treatment and is effective against many bacteria. However, chlorine can create disinfection by-products (DBPs) at high concentrations, leaves a detectable taste and odour, and is less effective against some protozoa such as Cryptosporidium. UVC sterilization is chemical-free and leaves no taste or by-products.


D

Desalination

The process of removing salt and dissolved minerals from seawater or brackish water to produce fresh water suitable for drinking and domestic use. Desalination is the primary source of municipal drinking water in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. While desalinated water meets high quality standards at the treatment plant, it can be recontaminated during storage and distribution — the gap ZeniRay is designed to close.

Disinfection

The process of destroying or inactivating harmful microorganisms in water to make it safe for human use. Disinfection does not necessarily eliminate all microorganisms (sterilization achieves a higher standard) but reduces pathogen levels to safe limits. UVC LED disinfection is one of the most effective, chemical-free methods available for residential and commercial water systems.


F

Filtration

A physical or chemical process that removes particles, sediment, and certain dissolved substances from water by passing it through a filter medium. Filtration effectively removes sand, rust, chlorine, and heavy metals, but does not inactivate bacteria or viruses. It is best used as a pre-treatment stage before UVC sterilization, which addresses the biological threats that filtration cannot.

Flow Rate (LPM — Litres Per Minute)

The volume of water passing through a system per minute, measured in litres per minute (LPM) or gallons per minute (GPM). Selecting a UVC sterilizer with the correct flow rate is critical: too low a flow rate and the device becomes a bottleneck; too high and water may not receive sufficient UV exposure for effective sterilization. ZeniRay offers models from 4 LPM (single under-sink tap) to 46 LPM (large villa or commercial installation).


G

Germicidal UV / UVC

Ultraviolet light in the C band (100–280nm wavelength) that is capable of inactivating microorganisms by damaging their genetic material. The most effective germicidal wavelength for water sterilization is approximately 265–280nm — the range at which DNA and RNA absorb UV energy most efficiently. ZeniRay uses deep UVC LED technology operating within this optimal germicidal range.


L

Lead-Free Certified

Certification confirming that a water contact component contains no lead in any part that touches water. Lead can leach from plumbing components and fittings into drinking water, posing a serious health risk. NSF 372 is the internationally recognised standard for lead-free drinking water system components. ZeniRay's 4 LPM model carries NSF 372 certification; the 10 LPM and 25 LPM models carry independent lead-free certification.

Log Reduction

A logarithmic measure of the reduction in microbial population achieved by a sterilization or disinfection process. Each log reduction represents a 90% reduction in the number of microorganisms: 1-log = 90%, 2-log = 99%, 3-log = 99.9%, 4-log = 99.99%, 5-log = 99.999%, 6-log = 99.9999%. ZeniRay's 10 LPM and 25 LPM models achieve a 6-log (99.9999%) reduction; other models achieve a 5-log (99.999%) reduction, as verified by third-party testing.


M

Mercury Lamp (Low-Pressure UV Lamp)

A traditional UV sterilization technology that generates germicidal UVC light by passing an electrical current through mercury vapour. Mercury lamps are effective but have significant drawbacks: they contain toxic mercury, require 2–5 minutes to reach full operating power, run continuously (consuming energy even when no water flows), and degrade in output over their lifespan. ZeniRay uses UVC LED technology instead — mercury-free, instant-on, and flow-activated.


N

NSF 372

An international standard developed by NSF International that certifies drinking water system components as lead-free. Products meeting NSF 372 have been tested and confirmed to contain less than 0.25% weighted average lead content in wetted surfaces. This certification is particularly important for water treatment devices that are installed directly into a home's water supply.


P

Pathogen

Any microorganism capable of causing disease. In the context of water quality, waterborne pathogens include bacteria (E. coli, Legionella), viruses (norovirus, rotavirus), and protozoa (Cryptosporidium, Giardia). UVC sterilization is effective against all three categories of waterborne pathogen.

Point of Entry (POE)

A water treatment installation positioned at the main water supply line where it enters a property, treating all water used throughout the building. ZeniRay's whole-house models (10, 25, 45, and 46 LPM) are point-of-entry systems, protecting every tap, shower, appliance, and outlet simultaneously.

Point of Use (POU)

A water treatment installation positioned at a specific outlet — typically beneath a kitchen sink or at a single tap — treating only the water used at that point. ZeniRay's 4 LPM under-sink model is a point-of-use system, providing last-mile sterilization for drinking and cooking water at a single location.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene)

A highly reflective, chemically inert synthetic fluoropolymer used in ZeniRay's sterilization chamber as a sleeve reflector. PTFE has exceptionally high reflectivity for UVC light, capturing rays that would otherwise be absorbed by the chamber walls and redirecting them back through the water flow. This increases the effective UV dose delivered to water without requiring a more powerful LED, improving sterilization efficiency across the full cross-section of the flow.


R

REACH

Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals — a European Union regulation governing the use of chemical substances in products. REACH compliance confirms that a product does not contain substances of very high concern (SVHCs) above threshold levels. ZeniRay's 10 LPM and 25 LPM models carry REACH compliance.

RoHS

Restriction of Hazardous Substances — a European Union directive that restricts the use of specific hazardous materials in electrical and electronic equipment. RoHS compliance confirms the absence of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and certain flame retardants above defined limits. All applicable ZeniRay models carry RoHS compliance, reinforcing the mercury-free and non-toxic nature of the product.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

A water purification process that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure, removing dissolved salts, heavy metals, fluoride, and many contaminants at the molecular level. RO produces very pure water but does not reliably inactivate viruses and some bacteria. RO and UVC sterilization are complementary technologies — RO removes dissolved contaminants, ZeniRay inactivates biological ones.


S

Secondary Contamination

Microbial contamination that occurs after water has been treated at the source — typically during storage and distribution. In the UAE and KSA, secondary contamination most commonly occurs in rooftop and underground storage tanks where water sits at temperatures of 40–50°C, creating ideal conditions for bacterial growth and biofilm formation. This is the primary water quality challenge in the Gulf region and the core problem ZeniRay is designed to solve.

SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage)

A classification for electrical circuits designed to operate at low voltage with protection against electric shock. SELV systems are used in environments where water contact is possible, providing an additional layer of electrical safety. ZeniRay's 46 LPM Pro-Stream Elite model carries SELV certification.

Smart Flow Switch

An automatic sensor built into ZeniRay sterilizers that detects water flow and activates the UVC LED only when water is moving through the chamber. When water stops, the LED deactivates. This intelligent on/off function means the LED never runs unnecessarily — extending its effective lifespan dramatically — and ensures that water is always sterilized at the moment of use, not during storage.

Stainless Steel 304

A food-grade austenitic stainless steel alloy widely used in food processing, medical equipment, and drinking water systems. Grade 304 is highly corrosion-resistant, non-reactive with water, and does not leach metals into the water supply. All ZeniRay sterilization chambers are machined from food-grade 304 stainless steel.

Sterilization

The process of destroying or inactivating all microorganisms in a sample or on a surface, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. In water treatment, sterilization is the highest standard of microbial control. ZeniRay's 10 LPM and 25 LPM models achieve ≥99.9999% (6-log) microbial inactivation — effectively sterilizing the water that passes through the chamber at rated flow.


T

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)

A measure of the combined content of all inorganic and organic substances dissolved in water, including minerals, salts, and metals. TDS is expressed in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per litre (mg/L). High TDS does not necessarily indicate biological contamination — and UVC sterilization does not reduce TDS. TDS reduction requires reverse osmosis or ion exchange. UVC and TDS reduction are complementary, not interchangeable.

Turbidity

The cloudiness or haziness of water caused by suspended particles. High turbidity can reduce the effectiveness of UVC sterilization because particles can shield microorganisms from UV exposure. For optimal UVC performance, water turbidity should be low — ideally below 1 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit). This is another reason to use filtration before UV sterilization: filtered water is clearer, and clear water sterilizes more effectively.


U

UV Dose

The amount of ultraviolet energy delivered to water, expressed in millijoules per square centimetre (mJ/cm²). A minimum UV dose of 40 mJ/cm² is widely accepted as the threshold for effective inactivation of most waterborne pathogens. Dose is determined by UV intensity and exposure time — which is why flow rate matters: water moving too fast through the chamber may not receive a sufficient dose.

UVC LED

A solid-state light-emitting diode that generates ultraviolet light in the germicidal C band (260–280nm). Unlike mercury lamps, UVC LEDs contain no toxic materials, activate instantly, consume power only when needed, and maintain consistent output throughout their lifespan. They represent the next generation of water sterilization technology — more sustainable, more intelligent, and safer for the home environment.

UVC Wavelength

The specific range of ultraviolet light (100–280nm) that is germicidal — capable of inactivating microorganisms. Within this range, 265nm is the wavelength at which DNA absorbs UV energy most efficiently, making it the most effective point for sterilization. ZeniRay's UVC LEDs are optimised to emit within the 260–280nm range for maximum germicidal effectiveness.


V

Virus

A microscopic infectious agent that replicates only inside the cells of a living host. Waterborne viruses — including norovirus, rotavirus, and hepatitis A — are significantly smaller than bacteria and can pass through many conventional water filters. UVC light at germicidal wavelengths inactivates viruses by disrupting their RNA, preventing replication. This makes UVC sterilization one of the few residential water treatment technologies effective against both bacteria and viruses.


W

Waterborne Disease

Illness caused by drinking water contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms. Common waterborne diseases include gastroenteritis, typhoid, cholera, and Legionnaires' disease. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that unsafe water causes over 500,000 deaths annually worldwide. UVC LED sterilization provides a reliable, chemical-free barrier against the microorganisms responsible for waterborne disease.

Whole-House Water Sterilizer

A water sterilization system installed at the point where the main water supply enters a property, treating all water used throughout the building — every tap, shower, appliance, and outlet. Whole-house sterilization ensures consistent protection across the entire property, unlike point-of-use systems which protect only a single outlet. ZeniRay's 10, 25, 45, and 46 LPM models are whole-house systems designed for installation at the main water line.
